HOPKINTON, Mass. — June 13, 2005 — EMC Corporation, the world leader in information storage and management, today unveiled EMC Smarts MPLS Manager – the industry’s most advanced software for managing next-generation, Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS)-based virtual private networks (VPNs). Leveraging Smarts’ award-winning correlation technologies, the software gives service providers the industry’s only solution capable of managing the transport, MPLS and business-level domains individually and in correlation with one another – an absolute necessity for managing revenue-generating MPLS-based services.

The software offers the key ability to discover and manage Layer 2 and 3 devices and circuits, as well as connectivity support for Ethernet, ATM and Frame Relay devices on the provider’s edge router. The software also introduces extended troubleshooting capability known as “VPN Remote Ping,” which effectively gauges the health of VPNs. Leveraging on-demand or scheduled remote pings, the solution is able to determine if a customer edge router is affected from an MPLS network failure.

Additionally, Smarts MPLS Manager provides comprehensive support for the Cisco provisioning system known as IP Solution Center (ISC) as well as enhanced support for Juniper devices. With ISC support, Smarts software can link directly into the Cisco provisioning system. Using customer names defined in ISC rather than IP addresses, providers can better understand and resolve IP failures that affect MPLS-based business services. Smarts MPLS Manager also offers expanded options for Juniper customers, such as enhanced device support for Juniper ERX plus M and T Series devices, and support for Virtual Routers on ERX.

The software supports networks with equipment from multiple vendors, such as Cisco and Juniper, including complex virtual router configurations. Additionally, Smarts offers correlated management of:

• The transport domain, including the traditional Layer 1, Layer 2 and Layer 3 elements that comprise the infrastructure in the network.
• The MPLS domain, including the logical connections (LSPs) that are layered over the transport domain, their related policies, and the control entities associated with them.
• The VPN and business domain layered over MPLS, including VPN membership and VPN topology.

Smarts MPLS Manager enables service providers to take a business-focused approach to MPLS management while performing the following functions:

Auto-Discovery

Leverages topology information from VPN provisioning systems, SNMP MIB instrumentation and other sources to automatically discover logical and physical objects and relationships in MPLS and related domains, including VPN topology and membership, VPN/MPLS connectivity, VRFs, LSPs Layer 2 and 3 and LSP segments. Organizations can use discovery results to verify and reconcile VPN provisioning.

Network Visualization
Presents VPN network topology in a variety of dynamically updated views that show the status of MPLS elements and their many relationships within and across technology and service layers. Specialized portal capability enables managed service providers to share defined portions of the network with the individual.

Root Cause and Impact Analysis
Automatically pinpoints the authentic problems that can degrade services delivered by MPLS VPNs.

Topology and Event Integration
Integrates and correlates MPLS and VPN alarms and events generated by SNMP traps, Syslogs and other Smarts solutions.

Multi-vendor Support
Supports Cisco and Juniper ERX and M/T series including complex virtual router configurations. A built-in Cisco ISC adapter automatically associates VPNs with customer names (not just IP addresses) and reconciles discovered and provisioned databases.
